Two Types of Hearing Aid Batteries

There are two main types of hearing aid batteries: rechargeable batteries and standard disposable batteries. Each has its own advantages.

  • Size 10 – Smallest battery, used in tiny hearing aids; lasts about 3-5 days

  • Size 312 – Common in behind-the-ear (BTE) and in-the-ear (ITE) styles; lasts about 5-7 days

  • Size 13 – Slightly larger, used in stronger hearing aids; lasts about 6-14 days

  • Size 675 – Largest battery, used in high-powered devices; lasts about 9-20 days

To help you choose the right battery size, each type is color-coded on the packaging:

  • Size 10 – Yellow

  • Size 312 – Brown

  • Size 13 – Orange

  • Size 675 – Blue

Battery life depends on the size of the battery, the type of hearing aid, and how often you use it.

  • Small batteries: 3-7 days

  • Larger batteries: 6-20 days

  • Rechargeable batteries: usually last one full day, then need to be recharged nightly

 

Using features like Bluetooth or streaming can drain batteries faster.

Tips to Make Hearing Aid Batteries Last Longer

Proper Storage and Handling:

  • Keep batteries in a cool, dry place

  • Don’t store them in the refrigerator

  • Keep them away from metal objects (keys, coins) to avoid short-circuiting

 

Activating Zinc-Air Batteries:

  • Remove the sticker only when you’re ready to use the battery

  • Let it sit for 1–2 minutes before inserting it into the hearing aid—this helps activate it fully

 

Caring for Rechargeable Batteries:

  • Charge your hearing aids every night

  • Avoid overcharging—always use the charger made for your hearing aids

  • If storing hearing aids for a long time, turn them off to save battery life

When to Replace Your Batteries

You may need new batteries if:

  • Sounds become faint or unclear

  • Your hearing aid stops working

  • You hear beeping sounds (a low battery warning)
